Scheduling & Vendor Updates
.
Both Western Maine Market and the Farmington Farmers' Market will be operating as usual this holiday weekend.

Luce's Maple Syrup and Shady Maple Farm Products are away this week but will be back next week. Cedar Post Farm will be away for a couple more weeks. Happy Snowman Alpaca Farm is away until August.

Western Maine Market's pick-up and delivery options will be slightly limited over the next few weeks, with no pick-up or delivery option north of Kingfield. Pick up in Phillips, or delivery from Phillips to Strong, may be available at unusual times. This week that would be Monday morning, and it would not be an option for highly perishable foods, since all foods would be delivered from vendors to us on Friday and kept cold or frozen as needed over the weekend. We hope to resume our extended route options sometime in August.

Similar to dandelion greens in taste, these beautiful red-toned leaves are sold at markets in Italy and are not the globular heads you see in the supermarket. Set in icewater 2 minutes to remove bitterness. They can be eaten raw and are also great drizzled with a bit of olive oil and salt and briefly braised, served as a side dish or under an entree.
Lamb's quarters
Menu Group: Food
Section: Vegetables
Category: Greens
.
Vendor: Rasmussen Farm
.
Lamb's quarters are mild greens, a great alternative to spinach. According to Steve Brill they are "one of the best sources of beta-carotene, calcium, potassium, and iron in the world; also a great source of trace minerals, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and fiber." Most gardeners view them as weeds, but the fact that they grow readily doesn't keep them from being tasty--it just lowers the price.
