Garden Status
We've successfully relocated three raccoons, but one remains on the loose, alongside that notorious plant-terrorizing porcupine. Despite the ongoing pest challenges, the garden is thriving. The plants look healthy, and we're getting enough rain that we only need to water the thirstiest vegetable crops.

We intended to check the beet crops yesterday to see if we'd have beet greens or beets ready this week. Since they are under row covers for protection from the pests, we couldn't just walk by. If they are ready, we will have them at the market, but not for pre-order.

Our second crop of broccoli is heading up. While we hesitate to list it for pre-ordering, we hope it sizes up before Thursday. We will have the last of the white cauliflower this week, and the orange cauliflower should head soon.

We are currently growing two new varieties of shell peas since our favorite Green Arrow was unavailable. The Alderman Tall Telephone peas are maturing, but judging their readiness is tricky—the pods swell before the peas form, making them look ready to pick. We will likely rely on the "rattle test" when harvesting. These peas have grown to seven feet, much taller than the fence, creating a bit of a jungle to walk down the second row.

The Early Jersey cabbage is sizing up well. Cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini and cherry tomatoes are all beginning to produce and will be available at the market.

This is the last week for our first crop of Bolero carrots. Our second crop of Mokum carrots are ready to start thinning for sweet baby carrots.

Snap peas are pretty much done, and we have only three napa cabbage left to harvest. The kohlrabi is gone, and we are currently in between lettuce crops. Hopefully, you enjoy endive this week!

That’s the latest on the garden status. We hope to see you at the market, and we encourage you to enjoy lots of fresh, local food this week, wherever you shop.
