PeaVee's Delights

PeaVee's Delights Newsletter

Mid September
Since a full day of processing fruits lies ahead and Saturday was spent at the Norway Arts Festival, this newsletter will be short and to the point.

Athena cantaloupe is ripening now, along with Tritan, which has smaller fruits being pulled from the vine. It is the last week for watermelon, which are also smaller. We have listed Mountain Princess tomatoes, that are from a couple of plants a friend shared with us. Some of you may have already had a taste of these with your tomato orders. We have been meaning to list them for the past two weeks and kept forgetting to when updating the site.

Pickling cucumbers are basically done, and the outside summer squash plants have been pulled. Grab a bag this week to cook up and say "Adios" my little yellow friend.

We dried a new batch of aromatic bay leaves this week, that will be pleasantly used in winter stews and bean dishes.

We have dried a variety of other herbs this season and will list them hopefully next week.

We have a bed of spinach planted, but it will be a while before we can harvest it. We're giving the Red Russian kale a break this week since we picked it hard last week.

The sunflowers are gone, and this is the last week for gladiolus. Celosia will be included in the bouquet mixes this week.

We have been drying sunflower heads. Is there any interest from anyone in using them as bird feed?

What a great season we have had, even with the drought! We are so thankful that our wells have held water all season.

Enjoy the week and the fresh bounty available from Western Maine farmers.
