Market Gardening from 1999 to 2025
We are so grateful for our customers, from those who forgive a mistake in their order that snowballs into a larger mess, to those who bring us ice cream frappes on hot summer days. We especially appreciate the ones who delightfully decorate their payment envelopes with doodles that make our hearts smile.

Over the years, our customers have become a community. They've shared recipes, garden seeds, catalogs, and helpful ideas for the market, even tending our stand when nature called at the wrong time. We have customers who have been with us since the very first days of the Norway Farmers Market, when it was held in the parking lot of the L.F. Pike's Store. (That's a throwback!)

We began by selling perennials and a few vegetables, and along the way, we added handmade baskets, wreaths, fabric bags, and vegetable seedlings. However, we always find ourselves drawn back to fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs as our core offerings.

We've also dabbled in the world of wholesale, supplying local co-ops, hospitals, and food groups. This year, we partnered with Cooper's Farm Stand, selling them our bouquets, and we hope to continue that arrangement next season.

Through the years, we have meticulously kept records of all our seeds, along with planting charts documenting start dates, transplant dates, and crop failures. While we don't have a true orchard, we've experimented with various fruit, nut, and berry trees, as well as flower bulbs and tubers. The number of varieties we've tried is vast, but over time, we have settled on a few favorites—both for us and for our customers.

Yes, we are already planning for another year of market gardening! We've invested in a second load of organic-certified compost for next spring, hoping to keep rising costs down. Compost and natural fertilizers are our largest expenses, followed by seeds. The labor may not be fully covered, but we get to eat year-round from the produce we grow.

As this season begins to wane, we've already started to dream about the annual flowers we'll grow next year. We'd love to hear from you: what products would you like to see us grow? Perhaps it's a new vegetable or flower, or maybe you'd just like to see more of a variety we've grown in the past.

We know that this summer's drought caused a shortage in lettuce, fall radishes, and greens. Every season presents its own unique challenges—droughts and wet seasons can be equally damaging. Despite that, we've had a good season overall, and for that, we are truly thankful.

May you enjoy the week, local food and the beauty of fall.
