Running Behind
First, my apologies for being late on the delivery route last Thursday, and a special thanks to Carol and Michelle, who had to alter their day to connect with me. I won't promise it will never happen again, but a great effort will be made to prevent it!
Tuesday night’s downpour was much appreciated for the inch of rain it delivered. It did cause some washout, but nothing serious in the garden, and only a small area of the roadway needed repair on Saturday.
We have now removed four raccoons from the garden, but the elusive, destructive porcupine remains. Double layers of netting and fencing now protect the chard, beet, arugula, and carrot beds. We're hoping this works! There is always a little cursing during harvest time now, as removing the rocks and netting to get to the veggies adds a lot of extra work. I remember when I used to photograph and paint porcupines, thinking they were cute...
Lots of new shapes and colors are appearing across the garden! Cosmos, dahlias, and celosia will all grace the bouquets this week. On the flip side, this is the last week for the Green Arrow shell peas and lettuce.
If you like beet greens, you can choose between a fresh young crop and the older crop that is currently putting on beet roots. You get more beet stem from the older bed, but the leaves are still tender. Just add a note to your order if you have a preference.
We keep looking for cucumbers—there are lots of blooms on the plants, but no fruit yet. Baby carrots will be available next week for sure. We typically have them by mid-June, and we certainly planted them early enough. Perhaps the cool spring slowed their growth? Gardening is a science, but it's definitely not a controlled experiment!

Mother Nature loves surprises, so sometimes we end up with a little more, and sometimes a little less than expected. We appreciate your understanding and support!.
