This year, our cut flower beds have exploded with an abundance of beautiful blooms, providing a great mix for bouquets, food for insects and hummingbirds, and a steady supply for drying. Every flower type has its own best time to harvest for drying, and we are still learning as we go. Pick them too early and they may have limp stems; pick them too late and they will shatter when handled. When we do get it right, they are just beautiful, with some keeping their natural color while others develop deeper tones or become paler.

A new crop of branching sunflowers is coming in, featuring deep chocolate flowers with bright tips, a bicolor maroon flower with an outer ring of bright buttery yellow petals and large maroon centers, and our first picked Double Delight sunflower, which is a large, double-crested, golden-orange flower. We hope more of these bloom this week—I should have taken a picture!

Our onions have reached the stage where their tops fall over, and we are currently pulling and drying them in racks. Onions require a steady supply of water to grow, which also helps keep them from being too pungent and strong. Not having to water them anymore will definitely save on water and time.

We are actively pulling finished crops from the garden, with green beans, arugula, and a bed of dill all coming out this week. We are also near the end of harvesting the Sunrise Sauce tomatoes, so this week may be their last days.

The celery is great right now, so make sure to try some before the end of the season because fresh is best.
