Dover Cove Marketplace is an non-profit,online market, operating in affiliation with Dover Cove Farmer's Market. Our Mission is to provide a convenient online marketplace for farmers, farm producers and consumers; to buy and sell fresh local farm products, in Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Somerset counties.
The "Dog Days" of Summer Have Arrived!
What are you doing to stay cool? The Dog Days refer to the hottest, driest days of summer. When Sirius (The Dog Star) rises with the sun, in the morning. Your local farmers mark these days as the point at which their; tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squashes, and raspberries start to ripen off. No wonder we enjoy these fruits and veggies so much. They are filled with tons of WATER!

A secondary bonus to these juicy treats, is that many of them don't need to be cooked. Who wants to heat up their house, with cooking, after a long hot day? A salad, or just simple veggie slices; can be SO refreshing. Don't forget to add some fruit, herbs, and edible flowers to it, for a little zing!

Don't forget to drop by Dover Cove Farmers' Market for an even wider variety of farm fresh goodies. Also keep your eyes open for announcements regarding local Non-Profit agencies with tables and events at the market. Our next event is "Brew of the Week", held on July 27th. Coffee will be available by donation, to benefit the Farmers' Market itself. Thank you to Laurie Sharrow for her volunteerism!
Mix Up Your Water Intake, with Sun Tea!
Sun Tea is a fun and easy way to use fresh herbs and benefit from all the wonderful qualities and flavors they have to offer.

There are no hard and fast rules for making Sun Tea; simply pick a few handfuls of your favorite herbs and wash to remove any dirt or bugs:

Place into a large jar and fill with fresh water. Seal and leave to sit in a sunny spot (preferably out of the way of playing children or running dogs) for 4 to 6 hours:

Once sufficiently steeped (the water has darkened in color and you are happy with the flavor), strain the herbs out and sweeten with honey, light maple syrup, or sugar; if desired. For an extra special touch, serve the tea with rose petal ice cubes.

Which herbs should I use to make Sun Tea?

Any herb you enjoy the flavor of!

A mix of mint; such as: peppermint, applemint, and spearmint.

A mix of lemon; such as: lemon balm, lemon verbena, lemon catnip, and lemon basil.

Handful each of applemint, peppermint, lemon balm, and bee balm leaves and flowers.

Chamomile and mint.

Your favorite herbal tea bags. Use approximately 8 tea bags per gallon of water. Also, feel free to add a handful of a complimentary herb to the brew.

Some Notes:

If the tea is too strong, simply dilute with extra water.

Be sure to use clean jars and utensils to avoid any risk of bacterial growth. Glass jars are best.

Add the sweeteners at the end. Then you can actually taste to see how much sweetener is needed, if any. You will also avoid attracting ants to your brewing tea!

Teas can be used as a base for other drinks such as smoothies or punch.

Experiment with flavors by adding juice or sparkling water for a special treat.
