March 6 - Rutabaga - Veggie of the Month
March is upon us and Rutabagas are still hanging on to grace us with their presence as Veggie of the Month. Try some!

Frozen Veggies from the Pioneer Valley are also back, which you can buy in 5 pound bags to bridge the gap until the fresh stuff sprouts again. Special thanks to Paul Harlow for letting us use some freezer space at his farm.

"This summer and fall, the Franklin County CDC has been taking in produce from local farms, then lightly processing and freezing it in our Greenfield, MA facility. We have amassed a supply of frozen chopped broccoli, chopped green bell peppers, coined carrots and diced parsnips.

Our frozen produce is vacuum-packed in 5 pound bags, with 4 bags to a case. We put labels on each 20 pound box that indicate the name and location of the farm that grew the vegetables as well as the processing date, which is usually within 24 hours of harvest. We also provide photographs and information about the farmers—materials for school dining services to showcase the local food system and the origin of the food they are serving."
