Midway of the Season
Since the first harvest of asparagus in May our weekly offerings have expanded, and now we find ourselves just about halfway through our market season. This year we hope to extend the harvest and our sales into November. We just purchased more seeds to plant for fall crops, and will be trying some new varieties out.

This past week we planted more lettuce, arugula, carrots, beets, radishes and dill. We pulled one crop of pea vines and hope to get the bed prepped and replanted this week. With exactly what crop is still to be determined.

The garlic and shallots are harvested and will be available to purchase. The shallots produced well, while some of the varieties of garlic did not size up, The garlic lacked a nitrogen boost this spring to feed the top growth of the plant. (Farmer errror)

I feel like once the garlic arrives our seasonal cooking moves into more hearty meal choices. Is that true for you?

Some of the crops we will harvest this week are beets, radishes, white cauliflower, celery, more cabbages, green peppers, jalapeño peppers, Romance carrots, and a recently planted crop of lettuce. I am pleasantly surprised at how fast this lettuce has taken off.

We are beginning to harvest cherry tomatoes, blush specialty tomatoes, and eggplant in small quantities.

The Salt and Pepper pickling cucumber is now producing the best of all the pickling varieties. They have whitish-yellow skin with black spines, a nice flavor, are three to five inches in size and have a good crunch when you eat them. Live on the edge and give them a try.

We will have sunflowers in the bouquets this week, not sure as of today if we will have bouquets of just sunflowers. Please add a note to your order if you would like straight cuts of them in a large bouquet.

May you eat well, laugh a lot and enjoy these beautiful summer days.
